Books. What NOT to buy.

Here is small list of books that I found disappointing, and books that I recommend instead.

Drawing the Human Body by Giovanni Civardi is a decent book, but does little to actually "teach" figure drawing. In my opinion, this book is more for advanced students of figure drawing who can already draw a decent figure and need to improve it by studying the "subtleties" of the human body. However, even still I think there are better choices, but if you are looking for a complete library of books, this one may add something to your collection.

A better choice would be Anatomy Lessons From the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. The figures used in this book were all done by the old masters. Again, like the last book, it is more for advanced students of figure drawing looking to "master" the art. Beginners may get lost. However, the book does a good job of illustrating its points and is a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection. The author also has a few other books available at Amazon that are worth checking out (even the ones that don't have a picture of the book).

Here's a book that falls a little short in my opinion, Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy. While it's true that there is some worthwhile information in this book and some good tips, the figures themselves leave a lot to be desired. I have seen other "beginner" books with much better looking figures. When studying a book, chances are your figures will begin to look similar to the author's. So, it's better to get off to the right start in my opinion. Try the book below instead.

I was surprised how many great tips were in Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure. This book is great for beginners and advanced students of figure drawing alike. There are lots of great illustrations and diagrams to follow. The figures look great as well. Highly recommended. You may also wish to check out his other book below.

Another good, cheap book by Jack Hamm. There are lots of little gems in this piece for landscape artists or even artists who do figurative work and wish to have better backgrounds.

I'm curious to know what you think about 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' and perhaps, too, the companion workbook.

I will be reviewing quite a few books over the next few months so stay tuned! I will make an attempt to review "drawing on the right side of the brain" eventually.
